ageing new wood

>Hi,

I bought a 3 foot wooden plane last week for 3 euro's. The chisel is in good condition but at the end of the plane there is a big piece missing.

Just behind the handle to the backside, half of it is gone.

I want to restore it because 3 foot planes are not that commen here (for this price) and i already have a nice pice of wood. The problem i have is to aply irregular marks on the new wood, so the new pice wil not be as "visible".

Does anyone have any tips, tricks, pictures, links etc of this subject?

>How about a photo of the damaged area? Generally the trick is to dig out to get a regular shape, build an appropriate patch, apply patch and glue. However, I'd have to see it. It could be that a generous application of epoxy and dust mixed could be shaped to fill any irregularity and the patch placed on that.

>Try finding another plane that is cheap and not restorable. Use it to donate the wood for the other plane. It only has to have enough wood to make the patch. I keep a couple of trashed jack planes just to make patches and new wedges.
