Hey, all you Aussies

Pam Niedermayer - Austin, TX

>Just saw a little show, called The Desert Speaks, that highlighted your Gondwana Link project. This is an effort near Albany in southwest Australia to replant and relink habitat that were split up for farming 100 years ago. Looked pretty cool. You guys have some weird plants.

One part of it was on the aborigines who were being reintegrated gradually. The host asked them about hunting and specifically how they hunted something called goona. The aborigines said they circled one gradually decreasing the radius. The goona would follow them visually and get hypnotized.

>Hi Pam,

I haven't heard of a goona.. Could it have been a goanna, which is a big native lizard?

>Probably was goanna, Ian, it was hard to catch all the strange-to-me wildlife names until I remembered captioning and turned it on. The host asked the aborigines if the the goanna they hunted tasted good, to which they replied that food was food, more or less. Funny, as if someone starving in the desert was going to pass up a less than tasty morsel. Anyhow, looks like a very good and cool project.

>Oh, the host has been visiting Australia for a couple of shows now, guess he ran out of things to talk about in the Sonora. :)

I'll keep an eye out for the mesquite show, thanks for the tip.
