Best finish for a coffee table top...

>I'm wrapping up on a G&G inspiried coffee table and need a durable preferable repairable finish. The table will see a lot of use. Food and drinks, cat's chasing each other across it... you name it.
I'm not a big fan of poly but can go that route if nessary. I'm looking for a satin finish also. Thanks!

>I spray conversion varnish for thse applications. Can be washed without harm and it is hard. Immune to water spills, alcohol, table dancing etc. Won't tolerate dog chewing. By diddling with dilution and with amount of delusterant one can achieve about any look one wants from "oil" to glossy lacquer.

I am no expert so take this with a grain of salt...
I have a coffee table I made 5 or so years ago out of Cherry. The finish has withstood two Golden Retrievers, two kids, my feet (and shoes), my scotch, a cat, and my wife without a scratch. It has several coats of Behlen's Rock Hard Table Top finish on it. It's been a pretty tough finish, although I don't know if it's the best.
Looks really nice on Cherry too imo.
