I certainlt can't do the math like Dave can, but I'll tell you an idea that popped into my head anyhow. How about using a steel rod surrounded by wood for the blade, or for that matter the entire thing. Sort of along the idea of knives that simply have wooden scales riveted to the sides of the tang.

I once shaped out a sword out of a strip of oak for a mini speech I had to give while I was in the Navy, and the instructor liked it so much that after the class was done he asked me if he could have it, so I gave it too him. I had all of 10 minutes in it, but it was a nice piece. Should of kept it, but I fiqured I'd just make another one, but I never have.--yet
