Oak color matching

>I'm putting together a case for an old clock movement. The box is QS white oak and I'm adding some trim that is made of red oak. I don't want the difference in species to be too obvious so I want to even things out a bit. I'm thinking of maybe trying out fuming. However,I'm not sure what this will do. I'd like to darken the case a bit but I don't think fuming will do this, but I think fuming may even them out enough so adding some kind of stain would darken them evenly.
Obviously I know very little about finishing.I would appreciate any ideas you would be willing to share. My usual finish of choice is BLO.If I want a more protective coating I use shellac.
