>Here is a skew rabbit plane I picked up recently. It is a monster--about 18" long and 2"wide. The blade was pretty sharp. I tapped it around a little to set and then pulled this long curly from a 1x4 furring strip. I love these curls.

Nice shaving. From the picture, never would have guessed the plane was that large. Question, though. Any idea why the knicking iron is on the "aft" side of the skew? Seems as if it should have been on the other side, if it's to be used to score across the grain ahead of the leading edge of the iron. I wonder if it was original?

Sellens calls these big planes 'jack rabbets'. Mine is 18" x 2 1/4". The tote is flat-sided which I think infers a late date of manufacture. The nickers are arranged differently than your example. The nicker wedges are replacements. No makers or owners marks.

Timberframing would not seem to need the precision. How about room paneling? That job should need some big tools.

>Yeah, I too wonder what they might have been used for. Something large scale, for sure. I toured an old (1700s) windmill recently. A jack rabbet would've been handy building it.

>I have one like that in the 1 5/8" size I use it for cutting dado's on stair risers. or other 2X construction. Makse for quick work on projects like that.
