I tried to get a picture of the stamp. It's near the top of the page from the link I posted. It's probably even harder to see in the picture though.

1 rivet and 1 split nut. The rivet is very solid but the split nut is a bit loose, so I don't know if that might be a replacement or if it's original.

Could be I guess but if so was done very well. I do think it is very unusual that it only has 2 rivets /screws maybe a good sign that it was a very low priced saw originaly ? I don't think the split nut is a replacement but rather the rivet is what was owner added. When ever I see a handle which has different nuts or they are on backwards or have rivets added like this one you have to think the handle has been off and somthing is going on. Maybe the handle was replaced with a Factory blank ? and that could explain why only 2 rivets/screws too....Don't know

These flat bottom handles, think often called a "London Style" are an old style handle and I imagine the saw has a good bit of age on it.Look real hard about half way down the blade and maybe a name is stamped [not etched] into it.....

An intersting saw, I would have bought it too ...if not to pricy.....Todd

>Erv indicates in the book that earlier saws have two rivets rather than three. Don tells me that, when researching the book, he found Erv's dating estimates to be very accurate. Erv spent a lot of years quietly gathering and studying hand saws. There just aren't a lot of these early saws to look at but, if more people knew what to look for, more would show up. I'd call Erv and try to get more information but he was having some health problems and I don't want to impose.

Thanks very much for your comments on the saw. I really appreciate it. Your posts are part of why WoodCentral is such a great place to hang out.

Sounds like the saw might be an early one. I'll get Don and Erv's book and read up. Do you know if Erv's other book, 'Handsaw Makers of North America', is also available?

Also, I don't know if anyone else following this thread would be interested, but I created a category on my website for 18th century handsaws, to use as a place to upload pictures and save links and info on 18th century saws, as a way to accumulate and share info so anyone can reference it.

Update on Saw

>Got a chance to look at the saw more carefully and looked for a stamp on the blade as Todd suggested. Found one that reads 'GERMAN STEEL'. I don't see any other markings on the blade. Handle is also stamped but I can't make it out other than that it looks to be about 5 or 6 letters long and the second letter is 'J'.

I uploaded some more pictures of the handle showing it from various angles.
