Anyone know how many #1s

>...were made by Stanley. I heard the figure of 250, after which they broke the mould, but that seems like too few to me. It seems there are too many that come up on Ebay...I'd have guessed a few thousand maybe. Anyone know for sure?

>Well it was manufactured from 1867 to 1943. I am pretty sure nobody knows how many were made. If they ran a batch of 100 every year there would be 7600 #1 planes. I would guess there are closer to 20,000 of them. I see several at every tool meet I go to. I would guess that there were millions of #4 planes made, as a comparison.

>Well they made them for over 75 years [1867 -1943] so I think the 250 is way to low...Doubt very much the story about them then breaking the mold. You have to remember the no. 1 when Stanley was making them was not anything special or some type of limited edition but rather just the smallest .... and CHEAPEST bailey type bench plane they made. In the 1920s a no. 1 cost $2.95 while a no. 5 cost $4.80 and a no. 65 block plane cost $3.00
I don't know how many no. 1s were made, don't know if anybody does but if they kept making them for 75 years they must have sold them right? Go to any large tool show and I think you will have a hard time calling a no. 1 a "Rare" plane since you will see a bunch of them...don't know. Just guessing I bet they made tens of thousands of them .......Todd

>In a production casting shop, you would not cast one plane at a time,,,,,probably they cast 8-12 plane bodies in one sand form (cope and drag). They most likely would have made many patterns for each size of casting (plane).
