Wanted to ask also ( ANOTHER stupid one here !) . . . Have a "Sykes & Co, London" back-saw (bout 12"). Wanted to use it to slot sone shelves. After the first quarter inch it started to bind. I'm assuming the blade is bent but I can't see it with my peepers.

Can this be straightened or is the saw, now, a "pretty"? It would be fun to use.

The saw could be filed too aggressive for this type of cut; perhaps is rip filed and you are trying a CC or vice versa; too little set; handle hang too high for such a purpose [pushing more down into the cut instead of along it]; very thin saw plate which is flexing in the cut...etc.

All those things can be corrected.

If you cannot see a bend, it probably doesn't have one.

>If you ever get binding when you cut try some canning or candle wax on the saw plate. Works wonders. If the saw plate is at all oxidized, consider shining it up. It's amazing how much resistance oxidation will give your saw.
