EC Atckins #51 Saw

>I just bought one on Ebay. Its in fair shape. I just wanted a good user for rough cutting lumber. I buy some long boards that are too long to handle in my shop, so I cut them down by hand. Anyway, this one cuts pretty well. The seller said it was never used. It is pretty sharp. There are some pretty bad stains and stuff on the blade. I plan on cleaning it up a bit. The finish on the handle is mostly gone. I took the handle off and it was very easy to remove. I'll clean it up and add some BLO just to make it look decent.

Anybody know anything about these saws? Any tips on "restoring" it? There is some kind of black stuff on the blade. Can't tell what it is.

Tony - whose other saw is a ripper and it does not cross cut very well!

>I've got a couple of Atkins saws, and it's hard to find information on them. There's an opening here for someone willing to put in the research needed to offer the kind of helpful comprehensiveness you find on, for instance, the Disstonian Institute website.

A little quick Googling did yield up the interesting assertion that Atkins made the world's first musical saw - that is, the first one designed as a musical saw, as opposed to using a saw as a musical instrument. I'll have to tell my son, who plays saw.

The link below has a couple of Atkins .pdf files put up by Wiktor Kuc at his website on the 'Storage Bin - Manuals, Catalogs, Information, and Software' page.

This site is a geat resource for hand tool use, history, repair, and tall tales of all sorts.

Also, IIRC, The Atkins firm was sold (forget the dates)and became part of the Cooper Group along with Lufkin Rule and Nicholson File before they vanished into the corporate ether altogether.

I'll look some more.
