At the Tools for Working Wood website, a combination Norton 1000/8000 waterstone is $60, and separate 1000 and 8000 stones would be $125 total. But the separate stones will last at least twice as long as the single combination stone, so you really aren't spending anything extra.

You'll also need some way of flattening the stones. Tools For Working Wood has a 1000/4000/8000 set that comes with a flattening plate, a case, and a DVD on sharpening for $183, so you wind up saving about $15 on this package.

Furthermore, if you use the combination stone for a while, and find that you are wearing out one side faster than the other, you'll have to replace it sooner, so the combination stone may actually be more expensive in the long run.

Finally, to use the combination stone, you'll have to flip it over, which means putting the side of the stone that you are using for sharpening down on your sharpening platform. This can lead to contamination of the 8000 side with 1000 grit particles, or just regular dirt and grit from whatever surface you are placing the stone on. With separate stones, one side of the stone will always be the base of the stone, so you don't have to worry about contaminating the sharpening side.

I would get a combination stone mainly for portability, if I was travelling with tools someplace, but not as my primary sharpening stone.
