Securing a garter

>I have built several vises using wooden screws.To cause the outer jaw to move with the screw I have used a device called a garter.I chop a mortise for the garter that is tight so it has to be lightly driven in the last few centimeters.The first one of these I made became loose with differences in moisture content,so the garter falls out of it's mortise.I had to install a small screw to hold the garter in it's mortise.I don't want to permanently attach the garter so gluing is not an option. Does anyone have a method for doing this? Thanks---Jack

At the moment I'm focusing on Windsor chairs building.I will build most anything if needed. I'm always learning,adapting,changing trying to broaden my woodworking skills.I work mostly with hand tools in my shop but will use power if it is a better way to get the desired result. My wife,Donna,and I live in the woods of Maine with our dogs,cats,and birds. We have 5 grown kids and six grandchildren. Woodcentral has been central to my growth as a woodworker. I pass through this place every day.

>Why not taper it so it wedges in the mortice but not against the screw, since you want that to move freely.

>on just what this 'garter' is/looks like. I am about to put some wooden screw based vises together on a bench and am not real clear on how the part you are talking about is done. Any chance you could post a picture or two?

This is one I made for a face vise. I made the garter so it was just a little narrower than the groove. It only is needed to pull the jaw open when the screw is backed out.---Jack
