>Hello.

I am looking at buying a Hock plane blade and chipbreaker from craftsmanstudio.com as an upgrade to my trusty little Stanley.

They offer High Carbon Steel and cryogenically treated A2 Tool Steel options. What is the difference between the two other than a $5 difference in price? Would I (a noob) notice any difference? I�ll probably just order the A2 option. It cost more, it must be better right? :)

Which should I get and why? I don't mean to start a debate or anything, just curious as to the differences between the two.

>A2 is supposed have more wear resistance by a long shot. It's harder to sharpen, which is no problem if you are proficient and efficient. Not always the best choice if you taylor your methods to other materials - everything else you own was happier being sharpened with other gear. Subtle thing moreso than substantive.

A2 is often mentioned as being 6 times as wear resistant, which is not a result I have come close to replicating but it is durable stuff and for 5 bucks and the provisos above I would go for it.

I really like Hock O1 it's fast to shapen and the cycle of sharpening and using is very efficient. For instance the hock chisels I have take only seconds on scary sharp to get back in the game so edge holding has not been an issue to me. But with plane blades that use inefficient mounting systems edge holding and putting off sharpening is pretty attractive.

I was just checking Hock prices on his web page and it looked like it has jumped a lot in the few months, like everything eles. But then go over on Lee Valley web page and check the price for Hock blades. It may be a good time to jump now then putting it off a while. I order the blade today and I don't even have my #8 yet.

Ron started out starving as a knife maker (his words, not mine!). Then when Krenov et al. asked if he could also make plane irons for the wooden planes, he (like any starving entrepreneur, with a confidence than strict adherence to the truth might not have warranted) said "Of course! No problem!"

I wasn't aware that he'd ever made chisels as part of his line, and I'm pretty confident that he hasn't done so in the last five years, but in this as in all things -- I could be wrong. Ron posts occasionally, maybe he'll pipe up and give us the lowdown.
