>There are various ways including stop hinges. Some chests may have been propped open with sticks and I've done that when a wall wasn't handy.

But for a host of reasons, I prefer to have my chest against a wall where the wall serves as the prop.

I hope you decide to build a traditional tool chest. It was fun, didn't take very long to build- as I recall it was a one weekend job, and its nice that can be moved, even with difficulty, perhaps if even within your shop.
