>Lever caps, blades, etc are interchangeable for #4 and #5 (2 inches). 4 1/2, late model 5 1/2, 6, and 6 are compatible with each other (2 3/8 inch). #3 and #5 1/4 are compatible with each other. Also, the lever cap for a 604 or 605 would fit a #4. The Stanley tool store (see link) shows a 12-004-11 "cutter cap" for $3.65 but there is no picture and it is not clear to me whether that is a lever cap or a chip breaker.

>Why does it need to be so shiney? why don't you just buff it smooth with a brass wire wheel or some emery paper to make it smooth so the shavings slide by. does it have some chips in it or somthing? is it pitted that bad? if it is pitted that bad there are going to be more problems with that plane than just the lever cap. How about chrome spray paint?
