working with mesquite...

>Building a nice little table of mesquite. In attempting to flatten the top I am using my number 603 with nicely sharpened Hock blade. I am getting a nice fine shaving, but it seems that no matter what I do I continue to get tear out on two different locations. Attempted to remedy by sanding, but these are deep. I'm open for suggestions?

By the way, has anybody else noticed that the price of Mesquite has gone through the roof in just a few months? Ouch! There is a big hole where my money clip used to be.

>The sonoran stuff anyhow, not too familiar with texas mesquite. You could fill the tearout with hide glue and saw dust if its too deep to scrape out. The one outfit I worked for that did a lot of mesquite work had bought a timesaver just to avoid tearout, I wouldn't have guessed we did enough volume to justify it otherwise.

Maybe you could also disguise the tearout as a crack or some other feature that gets filled with epoxy if you have any others in the top.
