Cedar shingle tool?

>I'm looking for a tool that can be used to pull the nails from a cedar shingle so that it can be removed without removing the shingles above. I was going to make one, but turn out to need it now, and I am away from the "office" for a while so I will need to buy one. First things first, I need to find out what it is called. The need is to remove several rows of cedar shingles above a shed so that I can flash in the roof and yet not need to remove the whole wall's worth of shingles. The tool slips under the shingle you want to remove then pull a nail at a time so the given shingle can be removed and a replacement inserted when the time comes. Anyone know what that is called? Or a better method?

>I'm not sure what it's called but I call it a shingle bar.I use one.Most hardware stores sell them.This tool has been around for a long time.They're also used to replace slate roofing.It's a long flat bar with a crook in it and a surface to hit with a hammer on the end of the crook. You slide the bar up under the shingle ,past the nail. Then slide it down at an angle to catch the nail. Drive it out and the nail is cut.---Jack

At the moment I'm focusing on Windsor chairs building.I will build most anything if needed. I'm always learning,adapting,changing trying to broaden my woodworking skills.I work mostly with hand tools in my shop but will use power if it is a better way to get the desired result. My wife,Donna,and I live in the woods of Maine with our dogs,cats,and birds. We have 5 grown kids and six grandchildren. Woodcentral has been central to my growth as a woodworker. I pass through this place every day.

>I'm just hoping a New Brunswick (current location of me) hardware store will be as well supplied with these as a Maine one, I have never seen one for sale in Ontario, though maybe they are.

Thanks for the tip, "shingle bar", I will try that.

>I have always heard these called a Shingle or Slate Ripper...do a search on ebay and i bet there are alot on it...very common tool. Have seen a few old hand made ones that are pretty neat, even once a couple made out of Bayonets that I regret not buying now.....Todd

With the right name, and and ebay search I can get a picture printed out and that will be most valuable when I hit the stores, otherwise the pimplies tend to treat one as though insane until a photo is presented.
