Last year I bought a Union #6 with a thick (older) Union blade. Unfortunately, the plane was a new Union plane, and the old thick union blade didn't fit witht the lateral adjustor disk. I didn't discover this until it was too late to do much about it. All Union, but a frakenplane that didn't work...

Hard to imagine an MF or a union plane at a garage sale.... With my rust hunting luck, in a couple years I might expect to find a borg Stanley 12-204 has been.

This is the secret to finding tools at garage sales. Very few garage sales have good old tools at them, maybe 1 in 100. So you have to stop at 99 before you find any good ones. So you want to stop at as many as possible, so they add up faster. I can tour a garage sale in less than 30 seconds. I generally turn the engine off but leave the keys in the ignition and the door open, scan the layout while I am wlking up so I can make a circle that hits the whole area. Walk through making sure to look in the corners and under tables, and if there is nothing rusty just keep walking and don't waste any time. Simple. I found a Stearns tenon cutter in fine condition this week with a Nov 23 80 patent date on it, along with some misc bits and woodworking magazines. I did have to pay $10 for the tenon cutter, so it wasn't really a gloatable find, but still a garage sale find. Yesterday I went to an auction where I bought 2 saws which are nothing special except that they used to belong to Otis Bowen and he was there and signed them for me.

>Hate to say it, but we were on the selling end of a garage sale. My wife advertised a sale to rid some of the youngster's clutter and I decided to put together an "opportunity box" of odds and ends (mainly stuff that was included with the stuff I was after in other sales, auctions and _bay).

My box was comprised of 3 smoothers--two were Handyman and one some odd name with a pressed steel frog. I sharpened all blades so they would cut and marked each $10.00 and told my wife to take $5.00. Also there were a few saws including a couple of junk backsaws and two better saws. The better saws were a Freud 8" dovetail, and a Two Cherries straight handle dovetail. These were marked $20.00 and $10.00--just what I paid for them some time ago. Got far better saws than these so figured they may find a home.

Anyhow, there were about a dozen other tools thrown in but really wasn't any interest in any of them! Except for one guy for came around when I happened to be there. He was looking at the two dovetail saws and said how he would like them, but he couldn't afford the price. I told him to take them for half the marked price and then asked him if he knew how to use them. He said no, but he had some trim to put up in his house and they may come in handy. I told him to put them down and took him down in my shop to give him a talking to. Explained types of saws, etc. and gave him some guidance on where to go to get a saw that cuts right from the start and also the name of a sharpened. Thanked me and said he was going to dig out a saw his grandfather gave him etc.

He thanked me and left and my wife promptly chased me away from the sale. She said we're trying to sell stuff and not talk people out of buying. Seems to me, though, I just gave a poor soul a push down the slope! He'll be back! He He He.
