help with brace bits *LINK*
tom beavin
>Howdy,
I picked up some bits at a garage sale this weekend and have some questions about them.
Two are spoon bits (I think), and have a notch in the tapered square shank. One of the bits is marked 'Mathieson', so I'm thinking the notch might be for a Sheffield-style brace chuck. Is that right?
The other bits are unusual, and I'm not sure what they were used for. They start out like a regular twist drill bit but then quickly widen out making sort of a diamond shape. Does anyone know what these are called and what they were used for?
Thanks very much for any help.
I'm a long time lurker here on the forum. I've gone pretty far down the hand tool slippery slope thanks in large part to the great posts and friendly atmosphere here.
Looks like I can only include one link per post, so I'll put the link to the spoon bits below and append the link to the other bits.
Thanks again,
-Tom
