Diamond update

>We have been experimenting with various finishes for diamond plates. A surface resulting from a milling machine taking a fine cut was evaluated. This surface would be cheap to create which is why we tried it. It didn't cut well when used with 1 micron diamond compared to a surface ground plate. I think it was too rough. It was densly micro- pitted, perhaps where the tool yanked particles (carbides) out of the surface.

However, this surface performed adequately with a coarser grit, 15 micron. I made some 1 x 6 hones to be used sharpening lathe tools. Charged with 15 micron diamond the milling machined surface cut M4 tool steel well.

>Bill - I'm following your posts with real interest. I visit a machine shop on a regular basis and see a couple of cast iron pieces in the scrap area. I'm going to "borrow" them next time for a lapping plate. I think this could be fun.

ThomD - please explain a bit more re really hard epoxy. I'm obviously missing something here.

>I always have a lot of boat epoxy around, and fairing compound in various grades of hardness. So one could fill the swirls, which could smooth the surface and leave a lot more surface area for the compound to adhere. And yet it couldn't dish as it might if it were lucite.
