>I dropped my Stanley block plane yesterday and broke the cap iron. It was my grandfather's. Should I try to replace it with a vintage cap iron (where would I find one?) or try to cobble one together frm a new plane? Thanks, guys ... Ive never had anything like this t happen before.

I'd try to find an orginal replacement. Ernie probably does have one on in his Little Box O' Treasures. Can you post pictures? If Ernie dosen't have one I'd ber willing to bet that one of us do.
Shame about busting the plane, but it could of been worse. I look at it as you probably wasn't the first one to drop it, only the first one to have it break. I imagine that most of our grandfathers didn't have cement floored shops thus reducing much breakage when they dropped tools.
