coating on new chisels

VTAndy4

>Hello,

Total newbie question here: what is it that new chisels are sometimes coated with, and how do I remove it? It's not an oil coating, but some kind of clear lacquer? Should I soak the chisels in mineral spirits, and if so, for how long?

Thanks,

Andy

>Hi Andy,

Usually it is laquer...so laquer thinner should remove it.

Mineral spirits or...

>As Mike says laquer thinner. Thinner is "faster" and should be soaked for an hour or 2.
