A: Well, IMO, there is precious little contact area between the frog and the blade, so it looks like it would be a chatter monster. I think the Ohio blade was a user made remedy for this condition. Mine was well used, though, as the corregations on the toe have almost been worn completely off. I should note, though, that the corregations on this plane are pretty shallow to start with....maybe a fat 1/32" originally.
Q: Do you use this one much?
A: No...not at all. It's a fairly rare plane, and pretty valuable, so I just sat it on a shelf. Although it was well used, I'm not conviced that it would be superior to a plane with more contact area between the frog and the blade...such as a Bailey.
Q: How would you compare lateral and depth adjustor to a Bailey?
A: The lateral adjustment uses a small lever under the frog. It engages the blade closer to the cutting egde so it may be a bit more precise, theoretically. But it has a bit of slop in it, so all things considered, it's probably about the same functionally. The depth adjuster is yet another lever under the frog, but this one is at the top of the frog where a Stanley lateral lever would be found. The depth adjuster is a rack and pinion type set-up, and seems to have almost no backlash, but also seems very sensative and responsive to adjustment...maybe too sensative, as a matter of fact. The depth lever swings a total of about 120�, and this moves the blade depth by about 1/4" total. To my eye, it seems like a lot of depth adjustment for the given swing. I think fine tuning the depth could be problematic.
Q: Any idea what the range is on the pitch adjustor?
A: I just checked, and the bed pitch can be varied from about a 40� bed angle up to to about a 50� bed angle.
Q: How does it compare weight wise to a Bailey of similar size (heavier or about the same)?
A: It's a bit heavier due to all the cast iron gizmos (all the levers are cast iron), plus the adjustable toe plate and the assosiated hardware.
Overall, this plane has some really nice innovations and really seems like it was ahead of it's time. It's achilles heel is the contact area between the blade and the frog. If the contact area between the blade and the frog could be increased (dramatically), this plane could be a really nice user. Having the ability to go from low angle and to high angle in seconds is very cool. Add in the adjustable mouth, and this plane has it all.
