My new workbench needs holes for holdfasts

>I just finished building a new workbench. I based it on Bob Keys famous cheap one. I just used construction grade 2X4s for the top and 4X4s and doubled up 2X8s for the base. The stretchers are attatched to the legs with unglued mortice and tenon joints and through bolts. I put some oak around the edge for wear resistance and also because I like the look of oak on a workbench...something very "old world" about it.
I need to drill some holes for holdfasts. I'm not planning on using bench dogs, though I might get some Veritas Wonderdogs at some point. Does anyone have any recommendations for holdfast hole spacing? Specifically how far from the front edge of the bench? Do you like to have more than one row of holes? Or do you just put in a couple of holes total?
Thanks,
Pete
