The difference betwen a 42 and it's later replacement the 42X ,which came out in the 1930s I believe, is that the 42 X has another plunger which when you squeaze the handle holds the saw blade befor the tooth setting plunger bends the tooth. Also I believe the 42x has a blunter point on the anvil which doesn't crimp the tooth like a 42. Don't really know if this makes all that much difference but the blade holding feature does make it easier to use I think and is one of the reasons the 42X are more popular....Later on Stanley brought out the 42W.....Todd

I'm not sure how long they made the 42X verses the 42W, but the first 42W I bought had the later Stanley maroon paint job so I'm guessing it's a 1970's edition. I also have a black 42W in it's original box from the 1950's or so.

Apparently the 42X was sold from 1935 to 1948 and then it was replaced by the 42W. The 42W continued to be manufactured by Stanley with several production changes from 1948 to 1984.

I have a 42X and a Disston 24W, which is a rebadged Stanley 42W, and the 42X is definitely the nicer set.
