Disston saw - what's this one

Andrew F in Australia

>Hi All,

Walking through my local trash and treasure market today, I came across two disston saws, both of which raised my curiosity.

One was a Disston model 600, new in wrapper complete with screenprinted logo. Teeth were stamped and not filed, so I left it alone.

Is this a 'modern' Disston??

As well, the other saw I came across was an older (1950's??) Disston saw with teeth in the usual position and also cut into the first 6" of the back of the saw as shown below. Medal was aluminium.

What was the purpose of this saw - I assume for cutting blind holes but I'll be honest and admit that I have no idea.

Cheers,

Andrew
