Some ideas off the cuff...

- Since scraping is an option, How about planing?

- Can you take advantage of the season and move the bench out into the summer sun as a heat source.

- Depending on your final finish choice, is sealing the gummy-ness in an option?

FWIW, using generic borg BLO, I don't recall having an issue like this when I use to still use BLO. I'm kind of partial to tung oil these past many years. I did use it inside drawers once and it took about ~2 years for the stink to go away. good luck.

>In the end, I scraped it off. the chemicals may have helped, but what a stink. the card scraper did the dead. a new coat of Lee Valley sealer and medium luster is next.
