....I think a second wood worker or aprentice would be a more likely choice though does make for an interesting exibit I supose
Heres a couple of big Crown molders that I have and you can see the hole in the front.One is probably 1700s and the other very early 1800s. Interestingly I have never seen one of these where there were any wear in the hole like you would expect to see if a rope was used in them.I think a dowel or stick was put though it and rope put on it or they were just pulled by the stick ,..Todd

>It seems to me that a water wheel would work just fine. You'd use it the same way you lift an anchor with a windlass on a ship. You wrap the tow rope twice around the rotating shaft. The master guides the plane, and the apprentice pulls on the bitter end to tighten the rope around the shaft, and backs up. When you get to the end of the board, or any time you get to going too fast, the apprentice just lets off on the tension a bit and the loops of rope loosen on the shaft and the loops of rope slip, and the plane stops.

I didn't get to see it work, but it is my understanding that it is still used and they said it was powered by the waterwheel. If I get back there, I will try to get behind the scenes and see what makes it tick. Kirtland is fairly close to Cleveland. Maybe someone that lives close to there can go take a look one of these days.

>Looking at the pics I`d say the rope action was roughly the same as you would get from a cathead/winch on either a ship or a drilling rig.
Place a couple of turns of the rope over the drum and when someone pulls on the other end of the rope is tightens around the drum and pulls whatever`s on the other end in the direction of the drum or a diverting snatch block.When you stop applying tension to the free end the rope goes slack on the drum and the action stops.
Saves alot of the muscle work by the helper and can actually be a very effective system with excellent feedback and control.
