Trestle-beam workbenches, anyone?

>I was thinking about building a trestle-beam workbench. After reading the comments in the "No bull/Plywood bench" thread concerning the length of unsupported wood, it struck me that all the pictures/plans of trestle-beam workbenches I've seen are on the order of a 4"x8" thick beam anywhere from 6-8 feet long on two trestles. Is a 4" thick beam really stable enough not to sag over this length?

As I have never seen one in person, any other comments regarding this type of workbench would also be welcome.

>Hi Wilbur. In "The Workbench Book", Scott Landis covers Japanese beams and trestles in chapter 11. I have a 9 foot 5"x5" ash beam that I use for hand planing until I get a bench made. I have had the supports spaced at about 6' with no sign of sag over the 8 months I've had it.

>Wood has a tremendous capability to resist sag, that's why up until carbon fiber came along, nothing could really beat it for stiffness at a given weight. I have beams made out of plywood and solid pine and OAK. The oak one is still drying, but the others are just fine. I occasionally use my bench as a scaffold so itholds up my considerable weight, it would take cycles in the millions to change anything.

The beam is just the main protion of a bench so overall you aren't any worse off than with a bench.

Where do I get a beam?

I went to the local hardwood supplier yesterday, and was told that they really didn't stock boards much thicker than 8/4. Does anyone have any suggestions as to internet wood dealers that might be able to supply a beam for this purpose?

My other thought was to laminate a bunch of boards together. The local Lowes (I know, I know) stocks clear Douglas fir boards in 1x4 and 1x6 sizes. I figure if I glue up enough of them face to face, I could build myself a beam that would be 4-6" thick. The cost is actually not bad.

I think I would look for a tree large enough to cut at least a 6" x 9", with the grain as nearly quartered as possible. It would be fun to work with this type of bench, but I don't have room for more benches in my shop and really can get more work done on the traditional bench because of my old habits. If it was done right, you would only need one beam to last a lifetime, so it would be worth some effort to find just the right beam. But slapping something together to see if you actually can work with that type of bench may not be a bad idea, it just would make more sense to me to think about what you really want and then do it right. Temporary things have a habit of becoming permanent.

I built a whole bench, top and base, out of two of these glued-up structural beams of Norway Spruce. They are about 5" x 15" in cross section. It only required two 7' lengths, match jointed, and a bunch of glue and clamps, to make the whole top, with the exception of the front face and vise jaw, for which I used hard maple.






A planing beam would be much simpler than this.

Beams commonly available in the U.S. would be of different dimensions, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding something appropriate.

Other, even higher tech, beams are glued up from components of OSB (Oriented Strand Board) and smaller dimensional lumber. These look like particle board I-beams, and are much lighter than the solid wood versions, but just as stiff. You might want to glue a hardwood facing board to the top surface to work on. It seems that these structural beams come in standard lengths, and if the particular span of the building the beam will be supporting is somewhat shorter than the next longer available length, the contractor may have several feet of offcut that he might rather give to you than pay to have dumped in a landfill.

Another option is to contact a sawmill. I built a sign post for a tavern, in 18th Century colonial style, like you might find at Williamsburg, and needed some strong, rot-resistant wood for the post and frame. Groff and Groff cut me some 6x6 and 4x4 posts to order from a black locust log that was on their lot. A couple of these ary lying behind the Spruce in the first photo.

In both cases, the stock was at the right price. It should be a lot easier for you to reflatten the top of a softwood planing beam as it seasons to the conditions in your shop, than the top of a hard maple workbench.

Both of these sources provided stock that was less than optimally seasoned, and the beams experienced some checking, shrinking and other wood movement as they dried. I could have minimized this in the workbench if had sealed all the endgrain surfaces of the glu-lam with Anchorseal as I cut them to length.

I'm not suggesting black locust for your beam, but you might be surprised at the variety of thick stock that is available at a local sawyer, for the price of making four cuts on their sawmill. A tree downed by a storm can easily be transformed into a beam by someone with a portable bandsaw mill or even an Alaskan chainsaw mill. A friend of mine a few houses down is restoring a 17th century house that had extensive termite damage. He bought some white oak logs and is turning them into square cross section beams mostly with an adze. If that's too primitive, you might want to find someone to help you saw a log into a beam using a pit saw.

>The local Home Depot has douglas fir boards in 4x8 and maybe 6x8. I think that softwood was recommended in the book. The price is only about $30 - #40 dollars so the price to give it a try is not bad. They are in the building section of lumber area. Good Luck.

The local Home Depots and Lowes carry 4x4 and 6x6 beams, but they are all pressure treated pine. Not really what I would want for a workbench. One day I'll visit that magical place where the home centers carry large beams and cheap southern yellow pine. Here in New Jersey both seem to be hard to come by.
