OT...Ebay live auctions?

>What's up with these live auctions...other than occasional lunchtime entertainment? Does anyone without Alzheimer's actually bid in these things?

Background: I was doing my daily inspection of infill listings and noticed this:

I clicked and began looking at the listing. When I stopped laughing at the catechism length statement of conditions, I went off looking for a live auction I could watch. I hadn't known Ebay did this sort of thing.

The first one I saw appeared to have "real time" output from an auction house via streaming text strings. Seems like it would be pretty easy to write a program to do all that. So, it reminded me very much of Ray Walston's performance in Paul Newman's "The Sting", where Walston's character "called" a horse race as part of a scam. Back to the live auction: I watched several pieces of jewelry fly by at lightening speed. "Wag the Dog"! Remember that one with Dusting Hoffman and Peter De Niro?

I checked another live auction and found this:

I really consider myself fortunate in not having the kind of money that would ever involve me in this sort of inanity.

That's when my software crashed. I suspect it couldn't swallow the streaming ticker tape applet.

I've gotta find something better to do with my lunch break. But what could be this much fun.

..This auction was taking in house bids as well as phone bids as well as computer bids over Ebay live auctions. Kind of amazing and the first time I have been to an auction like that but have to say everything ran smoothly. I did see a nice victorian ink well in the shape of a Pug dog where you opened up his head to access the inkwell that I really wanted as well as some baubles that Jazz wanted so we figured we would stay. She couldn't touch the jewelry as it went very high as did everything else. Julie was giving me this lets go look but hey I wanted that dang dog.Auction moved fast and was not slowed down at all by taking the ebay bids I didn't think but man they had lots of stuff to sell so we had a long wait

.... Shortly after selling some arts and craft chair for $15,000 they finaly get to the case with "my" inkwell and the auctioner stops the auction and tells the crowd as he holds it up "You know we had more emails about this Pug then anything in the auction!" YIKES !Jazz looks at me and rolls her eyes like we waited here all this time for nothing.

Well it does look great setting on my dresser now ....Todd
