Funny problems seem to keep happening with the same plane if it is the same one. Once again, you do know you can return it, right?

You're right. It is oak but not english - if it makes a difference. As you can imagine I am putting some kind of pressure on it to get a 10 thou shaving. So you suspect it's tannin? If it is it should clean off right?

Hi Mike, Yes I'm sure LV service will let me return it but I don't feel right doing it as it's 3+ yrs old.

>That's why I asked what kind of wood. But note that sometimes the reaction can discolor deeper than just the very surface due to porosity of cast iron. Doesn't hurt anything.

As for the possibly sole issue, I would merely afix some 400 grit paper to a known flat reference and take a few swipes. Not only would it help the discoloration, but would also remove any possible micro bump...just retract the iron above the sole ...
