Re: Hand Tool Chat Blows my browser

Pam Niedermayer - Austin, TX

>Wm and Dan, I can't vist the chat, crashes my browser (Firefox 1.5.0.4 on Mac 10.3.9, Java 1.4 I think). Now instead of "Java Applet Loading" I get "Applet Parachat Loaded." Then it blows.

>Chat works pretty well on Safari (10.4.6) and it is a fairly reasonably good browser.

>Yes, it does, thanks, as you saw; but Firefox just started having problems. Seemed significant to me.

Hmmmmm

>Not sure what is going on. I am running FF 1.5.0.4 in XP and it seems to be fine. William uses a Mac, so he might have more info. I don't know much about them, or running FF on them.

Pam, disable FlashGot extension

Andrew F in Australia

>The FlashGot extension was causing a crash on every Java page with my system (Win XP)- I disabled the extension and Firefox has worked fine ever since, can log on to chat no problems, as well as any other Java website.

Just one potential option.

Cheers,

Andrew

>Y'know, I am not so sure. OS X has come a long way since 10.1, and IE is hardly a lightweight. You may actually find that the newer versions are faster; generally speaking, OS X has gotten faster every release (though memory requirements aren't going down any....)

>My G3 iMac is stuffed to the gills with 256 Mb. It would spend all it's processing power cacheing memory to disk. My son tried it on his, and strongly recommends I don't bother. I'd like to get a better computer, but I've decided I have a lot more need for a better lathe right now.

>Thanks, Andrew, but I never got a FlashGot. Maybe something else Flash, but I can't remove my Flash stuff.

I suspect this results from a change in ParaChat, so I'd like to know what's changed, let them know that he change has mucked up at least one combination of browser/OS.

Re: Pam, disable FlashGot extension

>Sorry Pam,

"FlashGot" is an extension available to Mozilla Firefox - to see if you've got it installed, go to tools:extensions and if it's installed as a FireFox extension, then you can uninstall it from there and see if it makes a change.

The other option is to start up FireFox in safe mode when you want to run the chat.

Cheers,

Andrew

Because there are bad guys out there. :)

Just curious

Dan Donaldson

>Do you mean that you run Firefox in safe mode? If so, then it doesn't matter what extensions you have because they are all disabled in safe mode. Safe mode in FF is just a mode to enable you to troubleshoot problems, and as far as I know, has nothing to do with susceptibility to anything, unless it also disables Java and all of the video modes, which I have not tried. If that is the case, then nothing would work.

As I said, a MAC may be different but I don't know. The chat room works fine for me in both IE and FF. Have you tried it in a different browser?

Interesting problem.

>Oops, sorry, I mispoke. I run the browser in what I consider safe mode, things like turning off popups, no automatic application starting, and several other things. Guess I've been out of software development too long, I thought you guys meant "safe" as a regular word, not some sort of settable option.

>Ah, OK, I see. The only thing that I can think of is that it may be set to block Java scripts. Java has to run for the chatroom to work. If you look in the options, is java enabled?

>No I meant it as Safe Mode, and since that is one of the few things I know at all, I was wondering whether it could stop me getting all these freeloaders.

>What are your freeloaders free loading? There may be some settings that are effective but less onerous than Safe Mode.
