In theory Mortise chisels came in qualities. but for the life of me I have no idea what the difference better the qualites were - except maybe length. but I am not sure. and all the old ones I have are fine. The key is getting a proper handle - flush with the bolster, no leather washer, no splitting, and of course tapered in both dimensions.

One of those W&P chisels that you mention was won by myself, the 1/2" unhandled one. A good length blade and a good price. I prefer to get them this way and make a new handle - many of the handles need to be replaced anyway, even when they present well in the pictures. Cheaper this way as well.

I'd skip the names and focus in on length and width. Just judging from wear alone (tho my work corroborates) the most popular sizes (and thus the most useful) are 4 and 5 sixteenths. I don't think the length of the tool is a big deal. My only concern is temper. The laid steel portion isn't full length and it isn't uniform in thickness. So avoid the 3" blade.

Otherwise, I don't see how you can go wrong, especially if the tool is cheap. I've come across some that are bent or whose face has been ground crooked- i.e. no longer parallel to the back. The latter can be fixed, maybe the former too. But I typically do not. I find them sufficiently inexpensive to not bother.

>Butchers, very nice IMHO. I also have a couple of I&H Sorby, nice as well. These are laminated blades. Care must be taken in the lengths of laminated blade chisels. Most of the ones I see are short and probably past the useable steel. I disagree with Adam's post, if their laminated the steel ends about 4" from the bolster. Most of mine have 8" or longer blades this leaves around 4" of usable steel. I also have a set of newer Marples that are cast so you can use the whole lenght of the blade.

What sizes are you looking for? I may be able to help...
