>I have an old fillester and the knicker is a tapered piece of steel fit in a groove. The depth stop at its widest part overlaps the knicker to help hold it in. I am having a tough time getting the Knicker to say down and there is too much room under the depth stop to provide a tight friction fit. Is a small wedge the way to go or should I drill a hole in the plane next to the knicker and drive a screw with a washer into the plane so that the washer extends over and holds the knicker ---or any simpler solution?

How about placing a piece of veneer or shim stock behind the blade? or in front of the blade depending on where the nicker sits relative to the cutter.

Most of the knickers I have seen--and the one on mine--is a tapered dovetail. You may need to set the knicker, mark it and grind it down to just be proud of the sole. Once ground, push it into place and set it with a light tap with a small wood or brass hammer to set it.

Don't set it too hard else one can damage the tapered female portion on the plane's body. It shouldn't loosen after that.
