Another option would be Lie-Nielsen. Their chisels have gotten above average reviews. They are pricey but reported to be worth it.

I may upgrade my mixed chisel arsenal to L-N eventually. I have Footprint,Sandvik and Stanley. They are all very usable. I have a set of Irwin Marples that I haven't used yet. The price was phenominal at Costco so they found their way into my grocery cart. If they are substandard I will make them a gift to my son. (He has no chisels at all)JR

I have a 1/4" and a 1/2" I used to use for dovetail seminars, worked great in softwood, and they are now in my framing tool belt. Not cabinet grade, though there isn't much you couldn't do with them. Very handy size. I think I had to grind the 1/4" one from a 1/2" inch one since they don't offer that size.

>Everlasting... The black plastic handled 40 are OK. I love the feel of the wood and steel ones myself. Look for short ones on the 'bay if you can't find thru other means. Their mostly unexpensive because most people don't want the short ones and their easy to whip into shape. Besides most of the great chisel horders of them have passed along on the 'bay. Also as said in previous posts, chisels worn down a bit are at best steel as far as heat treating, edge retension goes. As long as they weren't absued...

I bought a set of the LV long chisels for my son, a finish carpenter who uses them professionally every day. If their steel is the same as in the butt chisels, they are great tools. I sharpen my son's chisels when necessary. I can tell you the LV chisels take and keep a keen edge. They do not seem to chip easily. If I didn't already have multi brand duplicates once or twice over for each width, I'd buy a set.

In fact, I use them more often that any other chisels, but I find I like the weight of the Ashley Iles chisels better for dovetails. They are significantly ligher than the Everlastings; and, to me, they seem easier to maneuver for delicate work. I do love being able to pound on the Everlastings with anything handy, something you can't do with the Ashley Iles.
