I allways had the impression from here that planing took this out of the equation. I'll admit, I'm a "Sander" also.

Here the raised grain attracted more gunk. I usually sand every other coat of finish or so. I'll have to do the same test on more woods to come to any real conclusion, woods I'm more familiar with (I rarely use cherry).
