planing vs sanding

>I had to do some test pieces for a project so I thought I might as well do a little experiment to see if there was any noticeable difference between a planed and a sanded surface after the finish had been applied. We have talked about this a few times before and IIRC some people maintained that a finished planed surface should (or does) look better than a finished sanded surface.
The wood is cherry, actually a 30-year-old cherry tabletop that I am recycling.The test piece was 2 pieces glued together in the original tabletop. I planed the whole board, then sanded half with 220 grit by hand (what I usually do to prep my wood for finish).
I divided both halves in half again, and I applied 2 coats of BLO to one half of the sanded side, and one half of the planed side. Then I applied three wiped coats of shellac to everything.
