More advice needed on cleaning..

>I got the knobs/nuts off of the wooden threads. That took some doing on one of them especially. I got the fence off finally and got the blade and the wedge out. I got the "foot" (which is a piece of metal which raises and lowers with a screw) off (you can't see it in this picture as it is on the fence side).
Anyway, I am left with the metal piece which is in the center of the plane body. It is quite rusty and I really want to get it off before I attempt to clean and polish it. It is held by six or so screws which appear to go into the wood. I don't want to strip the heads. If it was metal, I'd say give a good soak in WD-40 or similar. The screws go into the wood body though.
How do I loosen them? Any thoughts? BTW - this one I plan to keep.
