tell me about bowl adzes

>I am thinking that maybe this is what I need for rough hollowing the bowl of hand carved medieval musical instruments. Pros? Cons? Besides getting the bowl hollow, I am considering it for longer term plans of demonstration of in period technique.

>Andy, That is exactly what I used mine for. I made a number of pear shaped viols (actually Balkan and Greek pear-shaped folk viols) some years ago and found that a bowl adze was wonderful for the job.

Radically for instrument making, though not for treen making, I found that it was best to rough out the shape from a green half-log leaving extra thickness and then to season the piece carefully before carving to final shape. With a really good adze, seasoned wood might work well.

With some practice, you can carve within a 1/16 of an inch with a small adze.

Good luck and please post pictures of your work, in progress and finished!

>Andy,

Can't tell you much about adzes, but I can turn you on to this e-bay seller who seems to deal only in small hand adzes. From what I decipher from his write up these are newly made adzes. I've seen several other of his items and they look to me to be made from ball peen hammers, and claw hammers. guess thay'd be good material to start off with tho, especially the older ones.

Perhaps if nothing else you can contact him for a custom made adze for a specific purpose. I think that the handles may be of incorrect style for these adzes tho.

No affiliation with this seller.

>Holy c**p! The adze looks cool enough but why the heck to they have "Satisfaction" playing in the background of an eBay auction? I hope this isn't going to be a new eBay trend?

I'm also not so sure that "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" is such a good choice of song for an eBay seller... Mmmmm..
