>Andy, That is exactly what I used mine for. I made a number of pear shaped viols (actually Balkan and Greek pear-shaped folk viols) some years ago and found that a bowl adze was wonderful for the job.
Radically for instrument making, though not for treen making, I found that it was best to rough out the shape from a green half-log leaving extra thickness and then to season the piece carefully before carving to final shape. With a really good adze, seasoned wood might work well.
With some practice, you can carve within a 1/16 of an inch with a small adze.
