>Michel York a famous cabinetmaker that actually resided in York was having problems planning hardwood that was coming out of the land down under cut by the evil prisoners that resided there. So, he started experimenting with a famous plane maker Stewart Spires (Norris wasn�t even around yet, but you'll notice most Norris are 50 deg now)
They found out that a 50 deg bedding was perfect for planning these crazy woods from the land of OZ and not suffering form carpel tunnel from pushing a steeper angle plane (although they didn't know about carpel tunnel back then, they had a hard time lifting a pint after work). Other plane makers followed, i.e. Norris and others... But, an often forgotten plane maker was doing this far earlier using bevel up designs that you could bed the plane at a lower angle and just sharpen the blade at a higher angle. His name was Robert Lee of Loxley. Because every one laughed him out of England for thinking such heresy as making a bevel up plane he was deported from England and later settled in Canada. Michael York went on to become a famous actor and the rest is history.
If you believe any of this I have a bridge for sale too...

Also, it was not Michel York, but his great uncle, the Duke of York who, in the middle of a game of cricket, discovered that a ball bowled with a flight pitch of 50 degrees, left less tearout on the grass surface. Being an avid amateur woodworker, he decided to try this out on one of his many handplanes. The rest is history.... well, it would have been, but the Australian colonialists discovered that their grass was tougher and required a higher angle of pitch, notably 60 degrees. Why this was only a "half pitch" is beyond me.

>Half pitch? That's easy. It doesn't have anything to do with turf wars. The cosine of 60� is 0.500, or one half. For you bevel up, down under guys, that's the same as the sine of 30�. This alternate point of view might also be more familiar to those who would rather scrape than plane. To them, an angle of -5� often seems to make more sense than 95�.
No, I'm not about to convert the degrees, minutes and seconds to radians just so BugBear and those metric dudes can grasp it more easily.
