What did I buy here?

What did I buy here?

Bill Houghton, might be Spring in Sebastopol, CA

>Stopped by an estate sale on the way to work today and scored yet another North Bros. pushdrill (for its bits), a Dunlap saw jointer with cute little file almost unused, 6" and 9" LS Starrett hook rules, and two CL Berg chisels roughly 1/4" and 5/16", pic below. These are shaped and bolstered like carving chisels, but sharpened like wood chisels. What the heck are they? And are the handles like the original shape, or homegrown?

$10 total damages, by the way. Feeling pretty pleased. I missed a $30 older Craftsman No. 7, but I can live with just a No. 8; and I was able to steer the young man who bought it toward some useful tools there, so I felt good.

>Look like small firmers, Bill.

I have some Butcher that are the same style. As mine go clear to 2" and other than scale are the same style, that's what I always assumed.

Take care, Mike

Oh, you sucketh btw...

>Nice score. I keep my eyes open for such things always as a little work with a file and a grinder will net you a three corner dovertail chisel for finer work, and a skew dovetail chisel as well. You just need one more.

>Hi Bill,

I have a couple of 1/4" Buck Bros chisels like those (one is bevel-edged, the other is square-sided). They make nice light duty chisels for fine work. Regarding the Craftsman plane, do the "older" models you mentioned have a single piece cast blade adjustment yoke or are they the two-piece stamped steel variety?

Regards,

Mike
