>What is the general feeling about Mathieson gouges as compared to Addis? They look heavier, (which I prefer) but I've not been able to find much on the quality of their metals/edge holding.

If you are comparing mathieson to Addis, I assume you are talking about carving tools.
As for firming gouges, I have several mathiesons and i find them fine for the task (which is rather rough in my work). Mathieson are at least as good as any Sheffield maker in terms of steel.
As for carving tools, I'm not an experienced carver, but my addis tools seem unparalleled. They have marvelously thin blades and seem to have very fine grain. The worn nature of their handles, bolsters, and blades makes them particularly nice to hold, unlike, say, new Henry Taylor gouges.

Isn't that an "old vs new" kinda' deal, as opposed to an "Addis vs Taylor" kinda' deal?
