There are two fences, one stabilizes the board, and the other contains the plane. You can do something like make your base out of two boards of MDF the top one being shorter than the lower by the width of the plane. Leave the space on the right for RH operation. Your second fence runs along the back of the jig and aligns your board to the first fence.

People at seminars used to ask how it was the plane didn't remove the first fence during operation. As long as the blade is narrower than the full width of the plane, it will stop cutting the first fence after a few strokes.

A third cleat can be placed on the base of the board to hook on the front of the bench or mount in a vise.

When I built my first one I had the good fortune of someone (I'm embarassed I can't remember who) offering one suggestion, and a sketch, for how to do it. In short order it was built and has been used extensively for my current projects. I am glad that I wasn't offered a list of possibilities, for in my ingnorance of these things I would have had no way to choose among alternatives. Some day I will build a larger one or mayber even an improved one, but I am grateful for someone offering the advice of "do this" for my first.

This question comes up with some frequency. If my shooting board mentor ( or someone else that is experienced with these things) would prepare an Article with sketch titled "Beginners Shooting Board construction" (or some such) and send it to Garrett I will do the editing to get it into the Articles ASAP for the benefit of others with this question.
