>I'm going to try to post 5 pictures of the hand grinder that I posted last week. Ray W. asked for more, and I haven't gotten around to it until this evening. Two of the pics will be a bit of a recap, but I think they'll be worth it.
I hope they answer alot of questions, but if not rattle my chain again and I'll take more specific shots.

>For disassembly purposes I pinned only one side of the tool rest with a finishing nail. This allow one side to come off as you can see in the picture, and allows the tool rest not to spin i it's holes.

>In this pic I was trying to show how I had to cutway some of the base to make clearence for the grinder body. I have mounted other grinders that didn't require this nothing. Also, I hope that you can see the other hole that I had to make in order to get the tightening knob out.
This was my first base and was made by seat-of-the-pants engineering, using just scrap bits of wood. The base has about 3 inches one all four sides for clamping to the benchtop purposes. So far this idea has worked very well.
I'm going to post two more pictures which will be action shots, they are to show that you must build the tool rest wide enough for had clearance, and how I use my finger as a guide.

>Hopefully you can see how I have my finder registed against the tool rest, and using my thumb to clamp the chisel in my hand. By sliding my finger back and forth, and cranking with the other hand I am able to grind a new bevel quickly and easily with no fear of drawing the temper. If by chance the metal starts getting too hot I know it right away and stop. Once it cools I register the bevel on the stone and and give it another go.
This rig as been absolutely wonderfil for turning flea market junk back into useful tools.
Perhaps next week if somebody reminds me too I'll post pics of my homemade honing guide which I rarely use anymore, but still it's kinda' neat and very functional.

Dowel for grinder fixture

Nice job on your grinder. Are you going to replace the crank with a motor, grow a third arm, or hire a kid to be your apprentice?

Hire an apprectice? Yeah right, I don't think if I hired an apprentice s/he'd stay around too long. too much work for them. Now a volunteer, soebody who wants to learn by doing and watching, well, that's a different story.
