Church Kneelers

>The attached pictures shows pictures of some church kneelers that were made from 100+ year oak cut from the site of our new ministry center. They were made with combination of power and hand tools. All of the stock sizing was done with powertools and all of the fitting and finish work was with hand tools.

Mortises were cut with an Oliver morising machine, a picture of the mortising machine is posted over on the message forum, tenons were cut oversized on table saw and fit with LN shoulder plane. All of the surfaces were hand planed with LN 4 1/2 to remove machine marks and finished scuffed sanded with 220 grit sand paper. Finish is spray applied Laquer.

Shavings

>Attached is picture of the handplane shavings from the 3 kneelers. All of the surfaces were handplaned with LN 4 1/2 with custom made CPM 3V plane iron. It's nice to replace shop full of dust with handplane shavings. I can now listen to the radio while I work instead of listening to the dust collector and air compressor. I did do a light scuff sanding with 220 grit just to make sure I did not have any handplane tracks.

>Very beautiful additions to your church. It should mean more to your church that they came from their own trees. I hope they get a lot of use. I made some Shaker benches using that style, and they work great - strong and simple. As a minister who piddles with wood, I wonder about the finish on your kneelers. I've seen church folks set all kinds of things on the furnishings, and few things are good for the finish. I wonder if lacquer will hold up. In any case, I am impressed.

>The pastor was did upholstery work in the past. He plans to make pads for the tops so only the sides and bottoms will show.

>Simple style and nice proportions. I'll tell you, the difference in 'aparent sizing' between your first pic and the one with the shavings was very interesting. I realized kneelers are small (low), but my mind somehow was seeing them larger. The last pic nailed the size home with a nice surprise (for me).
