All of the kids in my neighborhood are scared of dogs for no particular reason. They run when they see mine, even though the worse that Ben & George would do to you is lick you to death.

Adults are afraid of hand tools, though I'm not sure why. A neighbor of mine keeps asking me about woodworking and wants to get into it. I've showed him my hand planes, hand saws and new mortise machine. He keeps asking me if I think the $800 Leigh M&T machine/jig/thing is worth the money or is faster than cutting tenons by hand and mortising by chisel or mortising machine.

Somehow more electrons must always be better . . . .

I think the keyword there is "faster". I've noticed people are always looking for a faster way even when it's something they enjoy. Not sure why you would want to rush through a hobby project.

I spoke with the folks at LN about the white bronze they used in their limited edition collector planes. My understanding is the the alloy does not "behave" in the same reliable fashion as normal bronze. For example, for some of the limited edition planes they set out to make 500 pieces. They actually cast over 700 knowing that they would have to discard approximately one third of those 700. Hope that helps.
