>I've got a molding plane I've been fooling with lately that has no spring angle to the profile. Anyone know the purpose of the spring, other than the users comfort?

>Actually, I am not sure it really has anything to do with user comfort. It as to do with the geometry of the mouth of the plane. The more steep the profile, the more open the mouth will be at the top of the profile. You can close the profile up by getting the plane stock more perpendicular to the tangents of the profile components.
It is kind of hard to explain without a good picture, and I unfortunately lack a picture. Maybe someone else can chime in with a link to one?
