>Do you really want to start this slide? They say hand tools and their use is a slippery slope. I'll tell you it's a free fall. First it's planes then hand saws, then bit and braces, then miter boxes, then chisels, then......... DAMHIKT.

Welcome to the Neanderthals of wood working. Yes, I enjoy every minute that I use them, sharpen them, etc., etc. I love to do hand cut dovetails. I'm one of those people who thinks that a planed surface is smoother than a sanded surface. Don't get me wrong, I still use power tools. They're more for stock preparation and finishing is done with hand tools.

>Actually the Bailey 5-1/4 made by Stanley is worth more than the average plane, you could probably get $30-$40 for it. That's a bunch of nickles in my opinion :) What did you do to the plane? The side looks like it is still considerably rusty; 200 grit wet/dry sandpaper and a wood block would take a large amount of the rust off pretty easily.

>Clean, clean, clean. New walnut tote (by me), and sent the iron off for sharpening and polished. Searching the dumpsters on Ft Bliss for my #5 w/ caurigated sole. But, that furniture polish thing on the steel REALLY works good ! If I dont use it for awhile I think its safe from the rust monster.

>I think most of that color is just my, still, rusty (pun intended) skills with the new digital camera (SWMBO). Would you use the paper wet or dry for this application ?
