My hunch is that they stack up orders to see if enough come in to make a production run worth their while. Meanwhile they are holding your money.

Nice tools but doing business with them is a royal pain. (IMHO)

You may be right that they postpone production until they can bank roll it from orders already taken, but I suspect it is more of a case of them announcing way ahead of the curve. LN, LV and others take the other tack, and don't announce until they actually have the items in hand, and for the most part, debugged. Well, except for Rob, who loves to taunt us!

BTW, the only Bridge City tools I own are a couple of blems that I picked up at tool shows. Significant savings and instant gratification. What could be better?

B.C. Making Too Many Different Tools??

Years ago their product line was much smaller and the delays were rarely an issue. Now they have branched off into a wider variety of tools which seems to correlate to production schedules etc.

I wonder if they should have stuck to a smaller core of products, make them very well and be able to deliver them in a more timely way? The last time a member of my family looked into buying a tool it was back ordered for 3 months so they declined to order. I wonder how many sales BC loses that way?

Are there currently long delays on some of their tools? I wonder about this after seeing the high prices that used LN tools fetch on eBay. People appear to be consistently bidding around $90 (plus $12 shipping) for used block planes that could be had for less if purchased new from Fine Tool Journal or even direct from LN.

What happens is if someone orders it and it's not in stock, it goes on the schedule. Well, if you are making 40 different pieces of furniture and running 6 or 8 pieces at a time each time you make something, you can have furniture scheduled for production for the next six months. If someone orders a piece that is not in stock, we are building out of stock furniture pieces for 6 months before we get to their piece. Doesn't work in todays world. Now we are batching different furniture pieces of the same wood type into the same cutlist, and only building things that are ordered. A lot of times it can still take 8 or 10 weeks before a piece is done.

People get caught up and want to win the auction so they creep the prices up to the point where they are almost paying list price.

Problem is LN has made some improvements over the years such as A2 blades along with I believe a powder coated paint? (or something like that) and the chipbreakers are thicker. So people bidding on used LN's with an old chipbreaker and the older blade (some people might want an older O1 blade as it does take a keener edge initially after a sharpening)

For me, I live in Canada and FTJ does not offer us the free shipping so it ain't a savings.
