Stability of japanning to solvents/strippers

>Hello all--
Picked up a Keen Kutter K6 which a previous owner had lovingly sprayed with "shellac". Methinks, no problem, a little bit of ethanol and that'll be gone lickety split. Price is right, I'll do it.
Well, that finish is not shellac, as it is not the least bit softened by ethanol. Something stronger will be necessary.
While this was purchased to use not to collect (obviously), I generally leave what I can of original finishes on my planes. So my question is, what solvents might I try that would soften a "something other than shellac" film finish and not damage the original japanning?
Thanks.
