Stability of japanning to solvents/strippers

>I'd try Lacquer thinner. Was it sprayed all over the plane or where the Jappaning is? It might not be jappaning but rather some kind of paint.

>Dave, I once bought a plane with ugly, anti-theft, orange-red spray paint. The paint came off easily with that gelled, orange colored, citrus paint remover from home depot. I put it on heavy and immediately began brushing with a bristle brush. The paint let go pretty fast. Once all bonds were broken, I rinsed the plane thoroughly with mineral spirits. Not only did this procedure not lift the original japanning but it brighten up the dull oxidized top surface of the old jappaning.

NB What worked once for me may not work safely for you.

Oh, he (or she) was thorough. It's everywhere, sole, frog, iron assembly. The frog is glued down with it.

The sole is a safe place to do a test patch just to see if it'll soften it.

>Thanks Bob, I had wondered about that stuff. The frog is glued down with the finish, I may need to supplement it with something that will wick down into crevices to free that. But it's good to hear that didn't damage the japanning.
